YOUTH REFEREE PROGRAM

The Coast Youth Soccer League (CYSL) Youth Referee Program gives teens and young adults the opportunity to stay connected to soccer while earning money and developing valuable life skills. Referees are an essential part of the game, helping ensure matches are safe, fair, and fun for everyone. If you love soccer and want to be part of the action, becoming a referee is a great way to get involved.

Why Become a Referee?

Refereeing is more than just a job. It’s a chance to:

  • Earn money

  • Stay connected to soccer

  • Build leadership and confidence

  • Support younger players in the community

  • Develop skills that look great on college or job applications

Who Can Become a Referee?

  • Ages 13 and up

  • No previous refereeing experience required

  • Players, former players, and soccer fans welcome

  • All referees must complete certification through U.S. Soccer Federation and California North Referee Administration (CNRA).

Get Paid for Every Game

CYSL referees are paid for every game they officiate, making it a great opportunity for teens to earn money while building responsibility and leadership skills. Referees also gain experience in decision making, communication, confidence, leadership, conflict resolution, and game management. Many referees continue officiating for years and can referee higher-level matches as they gain experience.

Training & Certification

To become a certified referee, participants complete a training program that includes:

Online Training

  • Approximately 7–8 hours

  • Create an account and register for the referee course through the U.S. Soccer Learning Center

  • Learn the Laws of the Game, referee mechanics, and safety procedures

In-Person Field Session

During the field session, participants practice real game scenarios and learn positioning, signals, and match management.

Cost

Registration Fee: $75

The fee is fully reimbursed after certification is completed, making the program essentially free for participants who finish the training.
